SUSTAINABILITY

We are aware of the inherent contradiction between the current fashion industry and the concept of sustainability. Therefore, we are fully committed to minimising our environmental impact and see it as our moral duty to keep improving ourselves on this respect.

MATERIALS

We only use the world’s finest denim fabrics of Candiani, a family-run company which is a unique example of ‘Made in Italy’ excellence. In 75 years, the company has become the world’s finest mill in the denim world. Producing for the most prestigious brands, Candiani challenges the industry every season by taking denim to the next level. Perceiving sustainability as a moral responsibility has led Candiani to become the greenest textile company in the blue world. All of the denim fabrics that we use for the production of our jeans are ICEA and GOTS certified.

Not only our denim fabrics are made of sustainable materials. We are doing everything we possibly can to make our entire jeans collection as sustainable as possible. In order to accomplish this, we are carefully picking sustainable haberdashery for the assembly of our products. To illustrate, we use vegan leather back patches, made of corn polyols (43%), FSC viscose (26%), and normal PU (31%). The total biobased content of these patches is equal to 69%, which makes it the greenest product among the synthetic fabrics. A common issue with vegan leather patches is that the difference in characteristics compared to normal leather is too big. However, these vegan patches, partially made of corn, have a similar look, feel, and durability as normal leather, making them excellent substitutes for those traditional patches. By using these beautiful vegan patches, we can proudly state that our jeans are 100% vegan.

Other sustainable items that we use for the assembly of our jeans are eco-finish buttons. As the name already suggests, those buttons are treated with a sustainable finishing. Whereas traditional buttons are generally produced with an electrical plating process, our eco-finish buttons are produced using an environmentally friendly finishing technology, which utilizes the base colours of the materials and does not involve an electrical plating process. By not employing such an electrical plating process, it is possible to significantly reduce the amount of water and electricity, without using hazardous substances (e.g., heavy metals). The manufacturer of these eco-finish buttons is able to save about 3,600 kWh per 1,000 kg of their products, which is equal to the average electricity consumption of a family for 20 days.

The Natulon® zipper tape is another example of sustainable haberdashery that we have integrated into our products. These zipper tapes are recycling-oriented products, made from PET bottles and other post-consumer materials using the latest technology. They are manufactured using both chemical and material recycling, a double-layered process that is carefully designed to reduce energy consumption, CO2 emission, crude oil usage and the production of industrial waste. The manufacturer of these environmentally friendly products is able to produce as many as 10,000 Natulon® zipper tapes from 3,609 PET bottles.

Other sustainable haberdashery that we use are 100% recycled premium polyester corespun stitching threads, 100% organic cotton pocketing fabrics, and FSC certified hangtags

PRODUCTION

We are extremely proud of the partnership that we have with our manufacturer, located in the south of Turkey. This family-run company has been a sustainable denim manufacturer for over 30 years now and is strongly committed to making sustainability more than just a trend. Not only sustainability is a key topic for them, but social responsibility as well. For example, every year special afforestation work is done to the arid regions of Turkey, on behalf of their customers. As a result, about 1,000 trees have already been planted in only 3 years. Besides, the company is committed to the rehabilitation and integration of citizens who have been in prison. Next to that, they organize textile workshops at prison facilities.

Our manufacturer applies the latest innovations and most advanced techniques in its production processes to minimise the environmental impact of its operations. For example, sustainable washes are applied to the jeans by using an innovative system in which air is transformed into nanobubbles. The application of this special technology during the washing process results in a reduction of water, energy, and chemical usage up to 95%, 40%, and 90%, respectively. Furthermore, sustainable laser and ozone techniques are used instead of harmful chemicals in order to create the desired finishes on the jeans, which benefits the environment as well as the health of the employees. We highly admire the innovativeness and all the sustainability efforts of our manufacturer, and are convinced that we are able to build a long-term relationship based on these shared values. Our manufacturer is GOTS certified and has been audited by the Fair Wear Foundation.

PACKAGING & SHIPPING

We also strive to minimise our carbon footprint when it comes to the packaging and shipping of our products. We use different packages, adjusted to the size of a particular order. We do this in order to transport as little air as possible. Our large orders are packed and shipped in FSC certified boxes, whereas our small orders are packed and shipped in patented fashion packs. The fashion pack is a vacuum packaging product, significantly reducing the amount of air that is transported by the courier. Transporting a smaller amount of air reduces the CO2- emission of a shipment, which is beneficial for the environment. Another factor that reduces the carbon footprint of a shipment when using the fashion pack, is the fact that the last mile of the delivery is done by bicycle instead of by car. Besides, given that the package fits in the mailbox, no second delivery attempt is needed when the customer is not at home at the moment of delivery. This prevents multiple transport movements of courier vehicles, reducing CO2-emissions. All other packaging materials that we use for our shipments are also FSC certified.

TECHNOLOGY

Nowadays, the number of returns in fashion e-commerce is an important sustainability issue. Return percentages in our industry differ between 40%-50%, approximately. Reasons behind those returns are mostly size-related. The consumer either ordered the wrong size or ordered a few extra sizes on purpose. Returns are extremely harmful for the environment, causing a lot of additional CO2-emissions. In fact, every single return will result in 500g extra CO2- emissions. Thanks to our innovative, state-of-the-art body scanning technology we are able to reduce unnecessary size-related returns by recommending the correct jeans size to our customers. We are extremely proud that, by using this technological solution, we can increase consumer convenience and minimise our carbon footprint simultaneously.
